SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This is the process of positioning your website to show up in organic section on search engines. This is an effective and common practice for large national websites, but it is impractical as a primary source of search marketing for small businesses. The best SEO programs typically only show a few keywords on the 1st page because it is very hard to add enough words on your website to cover all the terms that your customers will search by. Much of the organic search section is taken up by competition from directories containing many more search terms, such as Yelp, Merchant Circle, Yellow Pages Online, Super Pages Online, DEX, BBB, CitySearch, just to name a few.
There is usually no space on the typical results page of Google, Yahoo, or Bing for organic results! The organic results for all these search engines show below the map and cannot be seen unless the user scrolls down. Over 80% of all potential new customers looking for your products or services are searching for a phone number. Notice that most of the results in the map section contain phone numbers, so scrolling isn’t likely.
The diagram below shows what the user sees using a standard wide screen monitor when they make a local search for “Plumber in Santa Ana CA” on Google, Yahoo and Bing.
